I did feel incredibly lucky, and although those magazines are long gone, I still miss them to this day (luckily, many of those mag office friendships are as strong as ever) x
That’s ace to hear. I’d love to hear more about your time there and what led to you getting into it (after the cleaning job). Similar to you, I never studied for a degree (I did an NCTJ in journalism instead) and felt left behind a little. Daft really, as I don’t think it’s ever held me back but still...
It is daft, but there's that feeling of missing out on a special experience that so many people share. I don't regret my choices though - honestly. As I'd never have got into mags if I'd gone to uni. I started by submitting little cartoons to a DC Thomson comic - they published Jackie - and then they were advertising for trainee staff. With Just 17 it was a Guardian job, in the Monday media section. Ah, those halcyon days! x
This is fantastic. Needless to say, I think today's teens are in desperate need of a magazine. Tik Tok huh? Nothing compared to the excitement of Thursdays and a mag with you name on it dropping in the newsagent. What have they got to look forward to? They can access everything at any time of day or night...
Agree completely Wendy. And it's vast jumble of information out there - very confusing! Maybe someone will invent a brilliant new digital teen magazine?
That's two of us that didn't go to uni then. Stand tall Fiona, at least you finished your schooling, which is more than I managed - won't say why, because I am almost sitting on my hands to stop me typing too much and I am trying to be good. I missed out on the teen magazines, I was a twenty something mum of one when Jackie came out and had gone from Schoolfriend comic to Woman's Own magazine, with nothing in between. I had to discover all the teenage stuff by myself, which was quite interesting! Hilarious start to my day reading about your first job interview - shouldn't laugh, it must have been mortifying for the young you. Looking forward to Friday already.
This made me laugh! Mizz, Just Seventeen, and Jackie were all my bibles growing up. What a dream it must’ve been to actually work there!

Loved this, made me laugh at loud. Fond memories of Jackie and Just Seventeen! Imagine interviewing Johnny Logan ;-)
I know! Trying to look all casual but am sure I was quaking inside! :D Glad you enjoyed Kirsty xxx
Well who wouldn't have been quaking! ;-) x
